Case Study 3 - Sealord Factory, Nelson

BRIEF:
Refurbish the Opening Room walls and replace existing floors.  A high level of antimicrobial materials was required to ensure the highest standards of hygiene.  Paint was cracked and peeling.  Floors and walls needed to be stripped right back to the bare materials.

MATERIALS:
Two types of material were used:

Situclad E for the walls

Sterishield for the floor.  Sterishield was put into the resin for the floors which is an antimicrobial additive to inhibit bacterial growth.

Both materials were chosen because they are antimicrobial and have a proven track record in the seafood industry where hygiene is at a premium.   In the Opening Room, hygiene is critical.  Seafood is generally cooked, taken to the Opening Room and then frozen or freeze-dried for packing.  If seafood is contaminated at any stage during the process then the end consumer may be affected.

RESULT:
Extensive planning meant a successful result was achieved within an extremely short timeframe.

ISSUES:

Significant planning was required.

There was also an extremely short timeframe of only 10 days over the Christmas period enforced on the Construction Coatings team

All Sealord equipment such as opening belts had to be raised off the floor (suspended by a girder from the roof) so that the Construction Coatings team could work on the floor underneath.  From this point, it was also critical that the equipment was placed onto the floor, rather than being incorporated into the floor to ensure hygiene at the completion of the job.

All wall surfaces had to be sanded back to bare material so that resurfacing could be done from the existing material.

Stainless walls were diamond ground.  All existing floor coatings were removed prior to resurfacing.
